Topic: Chipping
There is a lot of confusion when it comes to
shots around the green so, I try to make it as simple as
possible. There is a chip shot which I explain as the shot
you will use from 20 yards and into the green and then there is a
pitch shot, which you will use from 20, 30, 40 plus yards. We
will discuss the chip shot today.
To gain consistency with this shot I teach that
two things change, ball postion (left foot ball position for loft
and right foot ball position for run) and club selection (less
lofted club for more roll = 8 or 9 iron and more lofted club for
less roll = pitching wedge or sand wedge).
Setup in every shot is extremly
important for consistency. For the chip
shot try to get into a routine of setting up the same
every time...
1) Alignment first and then square the club to
the ball,
2) Choke down on the club for control and
distance,
3) Open stance, left foot back for right handed
golfers,
4) Ball position off of the right foot for run or
left foot for loft,
5) 60% of weight forward on the left side,
6) Hands slightly forward pressed to deloft the
club.
The actual shot consists of...
1) Simulating a putting stroke, no wrist
involved,
2) Club goes back low and through low equal
distance,
3) Clip the grass which creates the ball to
jump,
4) Back of left hand feels like it is leading to
the hole,
5) Keep head quiet and watch for impact.
Remember club selection is based on how much you
need the ball to roll and how much green you have to work with so,
choose a club wisely. Example...a little bit of green =
pitching wedge or sand wedge. Medium amount of green = 9
iron. A lot of green = 8 iron or 7 iron.
Good luck and good
golfing!
